Reading Specialist · Grades 1–5
Colm Supple — Mr Supple
A globally minded educator with 13 years of international teaching experience across Ireland, the USA, Chile, and Singapore. I specialise in evidence-based literacy support for primary students in Grades 1–5 — helping children decode, comprehend, and fall in love with reading.
Background
I hold a Master of Education (Reading Specialist) from the University of St. Thomas and have spent the last seven years in Singapore, most recently as a Reading Specialist at Overseas Family School — delivering structured literacy intervention grounded in the Science of Reading for Grades 1–5. My approach draws on systematic phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension frameworks, always led by careful assessment of each individual child.
Career
Delivered Science of Reading intervention for Grades 1–5. Conducted benchmark assessments and designed pull-out intervention programmes for students identified as at risk.
Designed and delivered inquiry-based curriculum with a strong literacy thread. Applied concept-based inquiry principles and differentiated instruction across diverse international student groups.
Delivered the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), mentored students through PYP exhibition projects, and facilitated creative writing extracurriculars.
Designed and delivered English as a Foreign Language lessons, guided community service trips, and served as editor of the school's English newspaper.
Created interactive lessons aligned to the American curriculum, directed annual school productions, and developed a drama club for Grades 1–5.
My approach
Every child begins with a reading and phonics assessment. No assumptions — just a clear, evidence-based picture of where they are and what they need.
Sessions follow a structured plan targeting phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension — the strands of Scarborough's Reading Rope — in a sequence that builds real skill.
Regular reassessment and parent updates keep everyone informed. Plans adapt as children grow — sessions always work at the right level.
